Hey everyone,

Sorry for such a long break, no i haven't given up on art or anything...i sort of just fell off updating this blog and used my own art sites such as http://kubankin.deviantart.com/ or my own Google+ page instead (+Dan Szilagyi )

So update on work...i was working at Atomic Cartoons in the summer on a show i can't name but it'll be out next year anyway, i was doing some board revisions and posing...I've also become a teacher since the summer and been teaching young kids art and animation part time which i continue to do

Most recently i'm working at a game studio for a mobile game, look for it to come out near Christmas time on the App store ( iOS )

As you can see i've done quite a bit lately in school, some of this is lighting projects, character modelling and so on.

Backgrounds!

All of these backgrounds were created with a new(er) software i found from classmates called Alchemy, it's a vector based drawing program which lets you draw shapes and form very quickly.

I use it to get my shapes down before i go in and add color and light inside Photoshop.

I've been very inspiried by Pascal Campion recently with his work and thoughts, also i like Lou Romano's work quite a bit since i saw Incredibles.

The head sketches were created using Harmony ( not that software though haha ) it's a browser based drawing program i found that i love so much, such great texture and line

Just more recent stuff, i drew a Skottie Young Venom ( he did a short Marvel run a few years back ) and beside it i drew my own take

I also tried a Sarah Jessica Parker caricature below, i used an image i found in a magazine where she was advertising some skin or hair product

I've scanned in some of the sketch cards i was selling at the Emerald City Comic Con this year, i did a lot more which i'll post later but i tried to vary it from original characters to fan art to caricature sketches.

Below that i did a sketch of a bum, probably someone i saw somewhere downtown 0_o

I sketched a punky-modern girl, i always need to draw more female characters....

Creepy priest ( not of an actual person though, least none i know of ) gotta love how the Pope is trying to defend them all from the kiddy fiddling they are accused of ( and you know they did ) which makes me sick....thankfully i'm not into religion...

Emerald City Comic 2010

Ok so i finally came back from the Seattle Emerald City comic con!

I'm sorry for not updating since then, i've been busy since the start of the Olympics and after trying to get all my stuff ready for the con, i did just about everything i did except a few pieces i missed out on.

As you can see here i took some pics from the con, the guy holding the book was the one i bought from him after he drew me a picture inside it, it's none other then the very talented Alberto Ruiz! such a nice guy.

Lastly some comic and print stuff u did for the con! it was part of our teaser....get ready for more very soon!

Sorry for the camera photo first of all, i started this piece with the idea in mind that i wasn't going to be able to scan it, it is for a friend who i know loves the character i drew here so i sort of drew her as the character ( as it would kinda appear in the comics )

You'll notice i've drawn this character quite a bit recently as well, so this is the last one i'm doing for a while...although it was a nice change to draw a female character.

So i want to start off by saying the one sketch of myself was done by my buddy Luigi ( yes like the mario character ) in Japan, i sketched him and he did one of me as well.

The ass-shot girl is a cartoony caricature of my friend Maiea she wanted me to draw her like comic book style/cartoony and since she loves the character from X-Men that's what i did

I also did a fan art of Cronus from Class of the Titans for another friend as she's a HUGE fan of the show.

First i did some fan art for a friend for an art swap ( she made me a plushie Spider-man ) and i drew her favorite character from X-Men called Goblin Queen ( a clone of Jean Grey called Madelyne Pryor ) anyway i drew a few different takes using marker and ink.

I also drew the Cable ( Goblin Queen's son with Scott Summers AKA Cyclops of the X-men ) but i couldn't fit it into one scan.

Lastly some Batman Begins fan art, Scarecrow and Batman himself.

So a big Happy New Year for everyone out there! look forward to seeing what everyone comes up with this year!

Hey Everyone,

So i just thought i'd upload a whole bunch of sketches at once, i used more of that paper from last time that i mentioned for some of these drawings like the ninja turtle and Jim Gordon ( Batman )

I also have one more Arnie drawing with Morgan Freeman and some other characters from the Batman movie ( batman begins ) i also drew Carrot Top above ( but not so creepy, like in real life ) I did use photo reference for the actors themselves.

Colors are done with markers ( copics and Tria's ) and a brush pen ( faber castell brush pen )

Just some new sketches, i've tried out some new paper which i got from work..it's sort of a cardboard type paper and it's great for markers and ink which is what i used on all the pieces except the two guys.

Been trying out using brush pen and i'm loving it! i use a Faber Castell Brush pen.

So i'm not sure if you can tell but i tried to caricature Arnold Schwarzenegger in some drawings, me and a friend have had a long running thing to try and draw him...he owns tons of Arnie's movies and i love watching some of them.

On a totally different note, i suggest to people who haven't seen it to check out the Mr. Bean animated TV series! it's excellent! i was very surprised to learn it was animated in Budapest, Hungary ( where i'm from! )

So i haven't posted in a bit and this isn't even original work but rather fan art...i've been watching the original Batman : TAS lately and also played Arkham Ayslem a bit so i got some batman fever!

The greenlatern girl is my own original character based on a Bruce Timm-ish style. I started to read into the newest series from GL which i hardly do called "Blackest Night" and it's amazing! although one can't go wrong with a writer like Geoff John's doing it.

Lady, rough and inked

Hey everyone,

Been a while again for updates, i've been working on some stuff on my own so i guess that's taken some of my time up.

For this woman i used some live photo reference to get a better feel for pose, structure and even a bit of clothing ( push and pulls ) after i inked it for some practice as well ( although i have to get used to the crow quill and metal tip ink brushes )

Anyway i'm off to florida for a while so i won't be getting back to anyone for a bit

Comic update

Wow i haven't been on here for quite some time, i've been busy with my own personal work and sketching, i'm also taking some time to enjoy the weather ( whenever it's nice )

So a little update is that i finished pencils for the comic issue i was working on, it's for sure something different then i've done before but i think i grew out of it for sure.

These are some sketches and early concept designs for the main characters of the series, the only thing not related in here is the sketches of the woman with the paper and the faces

I also threw in a BG i had started to Ink, this is pretty much what the BG's inside the comic are going to look like ( at least some panels ) and the ink was a test to see how it would look

I'll keep everyone posted on the comic status

East Meets West : Agent West

It's been a while since an update, i'm a bit sunburned since last weekend so it's rather tricky to draw and the recent hot weather isn't the most comfortable to work in :)

Anyway i managed to finish this rough for Agent West before my sunburn, colors will happen as soon as i can move my arms in a more comfy manner.

I tried to design her in a sort of pseudo 60's kinda deal ( the gloves and boots ) but i liked her to look classy so i gave her a slit leg dress

More of an update for my movie poster idea, i did a rough sketch of the asian agent and then i went ahead and colored inside flash since i want a certain color style for this.

I looked at some bruce lee/ ninja/ jackie chan type movies to get an idea and for reference, as you can see i went with more of a bruce lee look but i made him older because you don't see many buff older kung fu dudes

Fake Movie poster WIP and sketches

So some sketches i did today and a little project if you would which is a fake movie poster, my idea is a movie called " East meets West" about a ninja/kung fu agent from asia who meets a beautiful and sexy female agent from the West who together are going to fight some evil dude, i know it sounds lame but i wanted to go ala james bond but i didn't want to be too cliche so i did this instead, below is my thumbnail and some sketches for the female character.

So i had a close friend of mine ask me and some other friends of ours to do some custom artwork for an arcade game controller stick he is getting.

He's a bit of a Marvel fan hence the Wolverine and Deadpool sketches and drawings below, he wanted to have those two characters and perhaps a third doing something so i whipped up some thumbnails that would cover his whole controller, he asked to have it Black and White ( Inked with a bit of shading ) and have it action packed.

So i guess it's a good thing i've been doing lots of fan arts lately, so here you can see my takes, of course i used reference and for some of it i relied on it more as my friend wanted something more like the comics ( he's a picky bum lol )

Nothing is final and just WIP for now, it might now even happen as he's still thinking of what he wants and how but i thought i'd post some work.

I won't be updating too soon since i've had a cold since last week too

The Batman Beyond sketches are not original works, i did use reference ( google and the film itself ) for them and tried to keep them in the same style as the movie and TV series

I did them for fun

The sketches of the girls are original and my own designs, i just sketched one and played around with hair and color designs

I was thinking of doing a piece with my Masked Luchador character from a while back, so i drew the thumbnail showed here ( i did more as well but i liked this one ) his pose i looked at some WWF and TNA type shows and images on google and youtube untill i found a pose close enough to the one i used here.

I then blew up ( printed bigger ) my thumbnail and threw on some muscles and detail and fixed the pose a bit, i inked the drawing and then colored it using Copics markers.

Now i just have to complete the BG and the other character

Oh and i posted a totally different drawing as well from my sketch pad, colors are copics

So this is a messy big post but i'll try and break down what's going on here

Starting from the top is my take on venom with influence from Angel Medina's Venom : dark origins style ( meaning this is my own original sketch but i had looked over some of his comics before i drew this )

below is a sketch of a superhero type girl in green and black.

My take on Spidy ( the color is done with copics )

a man i drew from a flyer from RBC ( but i pushed it in my style a bit )

A french poet/artist doodle i did at the mall with some friends the other day

ECCC - Seattle comic con

Sorry this sketch isn't mine, i attended the Emerald city comic convention this weekend in Seattle, WA and i had the pleasure and honour of meeting some big name artists that i look up to, such as Alberto Ruiz Who was kind enough to present me with this sketch of one of his trademark women drawings, i also met and chatted with Stephen Silver who i also bought a book from. I also met Shane Glines who was and probably is one of the most humble people i've met in a long time.

I picked up some art from Dave Crosland who is an excellent artist and a super nice fellow, check out his art on hiredmeat.com, i picked up a sketchbook from Derek Fridolfs as well and his work is top notch! there was so many talented people showing their work.

I also got to listen to Mike Mignola speak about comics :)

So i have some works going on and i'll post them soon

[EDIT:] So i've taken my friend Ragnar's advice and changed the Guard/Cop's expression to something less "happy" to hopefully be more clear and also made him a bit smaller and further back to show the distance between him and the guys busting out :)

I've been working on this piece for a few days, i had this idea of a bunch of prisoners escaping and a search light behind ( classic jail break scene?)

another reason was i got some good advice lately about using more of a story telling method to do drawings ( simply put to add backgrounds and charaacters that interact to tell a story ) so this is a first attempt ( i have some pieces but i need to do more )

I re-used an old drawing as well to speed some things up :)

one of the male models is quite famous with posing with his sword collection.

And some memories of my former work place, the guy in the picture had a nickname which was "yaletown yoni" since he had worked at all these different studios and therefore knew just about everyone, also he'd stop and chat with lots of people even when we went for coffee.

A Big happy New Year's to everyone! It's finally 2009 and hopefully things go much better then 2008

I don't have much to share to start things off this year but i made this "comp" of two different sets of drawings that i did, i could have posted them apart but for some reason i felt i wanted to save some space.

The top image i had this little story idea of a guy running away from some sort of creature ( you can see the creature's claw outline on his back) and running towards an older styled house ( kinda like the house from Psycho) but that's as far as i took this piece

below is Atlanta and Archie from Class of the Titans, in this one i pictured Atlanta to be saving Archie since he's some what of a wuss in the series time to time.

Best of 2008 ( games and movies )

Something new here, i've been reading a few blogs that i check often and they have put lists of the best ( or worst ) things(?) up so i thought i'd do something a little different and make my own list of the best Games and Films of 2008 ( seeing as how i worked in both )

First the games side of things

1. Fallout 3 ( PS3/Xbox 360/)

HUGE....is what i call this game, there is so many options and paths to take that the replay value goes up, i never played elder scrolls and i don't intent to but seeing ( and hearing ) about this game made me interested in it, i got my friend a copy recently and i've been watching him play and he's having a hard time choosing what he thinks he'd like to do, i love that it's so open and there is no linear path ( sometimes good and bad ) lots of neat references to the 50's as well in the game

2. Left 4 Dead ( Xbox 360/ PC )

This seems like a typical zombie game and for the most part it is except for the little things such as really needing to work as a team to live! helping teammates and healing are just a few things you can do, it's fun playing as a zombie as well and working within a team to hunt down the living people playing. I'd say this game does a fine job of bringing people together ( headsets are a must for good co-op play!)

now a few overrated games:

warhammer online- a bad rip off of WoW is what i first thought on seeing it, sure it's the same genre but still....

LittleBigPlanet- PS3 is dying and it needs to sell lots of machines to keep it going so welcome to tons of advertisement for LBP, overall not my cup of tea, great design but ultimatly a game made by other gamers and for the most part i don't want to spend hours building a level.

Gears of war 2- nothing new since gears 1 and even then the series isn't original enough to capture my attention

Grand Theft Auto IV- waaay overrated, it sold but it just seems a little too boring for my tastes, and the mo-cap looks like ass

God of War Chains of olympus- not overrated but far too short to enjoy it, and it is probably one of the only really fun games on PSP at this moment

Ok some films now

Iron man- loved this movie! well acted and told well enough, fun and well paced ( cheesy enough clip at the very end though )

Batman Dark Knight- everyone has seen this movie twice ( i know i did ) and it's well worth it in terms of how it's presented, the story and the acting from all characters, my only wonder is how can you top this?

Wall-e- great acting considering there is almost no talking! a true throw back to the golden age of animation and in general film, the only parts that were a bit "bad" was as soon as the humans come into the story

Now some not so good movies of the year:

Hellboy 2: the golden army- pacing was outta wack on this movie, overall i couldn't care less for the story and i was expecting some really neat designs considering the director but it fell short.

Hulk- i would say this movie was great to kill time with, i never liked the hulk and this is no different but the movie in itself was well done ( although Liv Tyler's acting could have been much better )

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull- George....how could you guys fuck up a movie series like this? i love the original 3 movies and this one was no where near them in terms of story ( i mean fucking aliens? sure there was some god junk in last crusade but still....) i guess old George has stopped caring about his once great creations ( star wars etc )

Twilight- i hate this movie and that main guy character with a deep deep passion, i never heard of the series but after seeing enough trailers and reading up on it i think i can say beyond some shallow girls and tweens liking this movie that it's a big piece of crap, typical teen movie with a romeo and juilet story line or something of the sort, i also find it funny that many women ( not little girls ) like that main good guy vampire character but i'd be damned in hell if they would still like him as much if he were a real vampire...women seem to fall in love with things that they otherwise think is horrible and would never go near but somehow have feelings for them in a movie...go figure

And that ladies and gentlemen is my sort of short list of games and movies i found amusing and not so amusing this year

Just some updates, i finally finished up work at Nexon until the new year.

I just recently saw this movie over the weekend with some friends and i have to say it was the best comedy of the season! well in a bad way i mean....i can't begin to explain the cheesy lines and acting in this film, it's over the top but with lots of un-needed violence and full of sappy corny moments.

i did this doodle of the Punisher at work, he has hair all over and even on top of his clothing because he is that manly

No posts for a while because i've come down with the cold so i'm going to get better before i post again

Wow, Been busy at work! i'm very glad to be kept busy and thinking so it's great.

I think when it's all said and done it should be a amazing game!( the one i'm currently working on) I'll be sure to let everyone here know to download and play it!
In the meantime if anyone likes FPS games i suggest "Combat Arms"! or Sugar Rush! some really talented local vancouver peeps made Sugar Rush happen so be sure to check it out.

wow i've put up quite a bit of stuff! it's mostly sketchs and doodles from the last few days and one of them is a compile of older work i never finshed (e.g the danger girl head and mountain BG )

So not much to post up, I've been busy as heck this late week or so with work and it's drained my energy

Hey everyone,

sorry for the lack of updates, it's been a little crazy with everything.

First i should mention i've started a new job! that's right, i work as a storyboard artist at Nexon games ( known for games like sugar rush, maple story, combat arms and more!) they make free on-line games with the ability to make mirco-transactions ( buying items for your character in-game for super cheap ) and so far it's proven a great business.

anyway you can see the website at www.humanaturestudios.com and maybe even download some of our games! I can't say what i'm doing just yet but it should be out to the public soon enough.

In the meantime i've been working on character designs for a flash short i'm doing.

it's called "El Prez" and it's about the president ( unknown country at this point, but similar to the USA ) and his family, mainly his wife, daugther and young son.

So far this is just concept work, in my last post i had done a rough turn-a-round for his wife "Joyce"

Obama 08!

my Vote is for Obama for president, i think he's an intelligent leader and he makes vastly more sense then John McCain who seems hell bent on messing up the US economy even more.

So hence the little copic doodle i did below of him, reminds me of a few t-shirts i've seen in a similar style.

Next i'm doing an animated short with someone and below is a rough rough turnaround for a female character.

I have a few drawings for an Arab fellow for the same short.

And some other doodles from a recent mall sketch trip.

This was done for a cilent for a short comic he was thinking of doing.
I was a bit lucky because i wanted to try out some shots using similar characters to my own comic, i think it turned out fairly well considering i did it fairly quick and with not much info on characters or detail.

I know its a weak post, I've been fairly busy working on my comic and just relaxing here and there so i haven't sketched much lately.
The girl in this post is a rough for a panel for aforementioned comic so i'll be posting more once i'm done.
Ryu isn't original but i did it in honor to SF4 which i still don't think is a very good game but i want to try it out once its on console.

On a different note, i noticed lately that blogger has gotten so much better with getting updated and really becoming more like a proper site to keep track of friends and people you like, in fact i'll say its more like DA now then anything which is great i think.
So this is a bit cheap of a post since its not "original" work but just some sketchs and copic work from class of the titans, i've been meaning to get more colors to expand my copic marker set but damn those things are expensive!

Hey Guys,

Just some updates and sketchs.

If you notice the "jason" character and the girls here are concept work for a comic i'm doing with a writer ( its nothing pro...yet hehe) so we're just working with designs and rough layout for issue one, my goal is to have it done and printed by the time the san diego comic con starts next year! I plan to show it around and get some attention from a few studios and companies.
Check back as i'll post up more work as i do it.

Hey Everyone,

So i finally got back from a my week long trip in Orlando, Florida! It was a great time since i visited Disneyworld and Universal Studios during my stay, I can't begin to say how cool the rides were, in case you didn't know Disney world is about 47 square miles big ( huge) so there was a lot of walking involved but it was a fun time, I'll upload some photos from my trip in my next post.
in the meantime enjoy my little sketchs and doodles, i did these after i got back on monday.

Hey Boys and Girls,

Yes i know i've been a bad blogger lately for not posting too often and getting back to those who took the time to comment on my last few posts, I'll make it up to you by returning the comments and seeing your awesome posts!
Anyway like the title of the post says, I'm taking a small vaction with family to the wonderful world of Disney(world)!
I leave this up coming monday and won't be back till August 4th, I'll upload some photos when i get back though!
Besides leaving to Orland,Florida ( where disneyworld is) the place i work at is closed for two weeks! Yay! some time off to catch up on work on drawing! so expect some posts when i get back.

Hey Bloggers,

Sorry it took a bit of time for an update, i had to re-format my computer because i had some spy-ware problems, after a few days of messing around its all ok.
In the mean time i whipped these up, check out cronus' intense stare at those boobs!

I also saw Hellboy II the other day and its quite a good movie, great designs but a bit weak in story, i have yet to see Wall-E or kung fu panda though and i intent to see them both.

R.I.P-Michael Turner

A bit of sad news fellow artists and bloggers, although this didn't happen today, i was overlooking Jim lee's blog and as i went down i noticed a post about his fellow comic artist Michael Turner.

Jim talked about how he and Michael worked together and what kind of person Michael was...It didn't quite hit me untill i looked on a few more sites that confirmed that Amercian comic artist Michael Turner died on June 27th, 2008 due to bone cancer.

For those who might not Know Michael Turner I'll give you a bit of back story ( you can also check his bio http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Turner_(comics)

Michael's early work started on comics(Top cow) like ballistic and codename-strkeforce and he is one of the co-creators of the comic series Witchblade ( he worked with Jim lee and Marc Silvestri )

He pencilled and did covers for the entire first volume of fathom(1-15) as well as many many covers for Marvel, DC and Top cow.

Due to him having cancer treatment ( after fathom vol. 1) other artists took over and pencilled for fathom vol.2(talent caldwell,koi turnbull) as well as its off shoots ( aspen seasons, etc) Michael came back after a lenghty down time and began worked on Soulfire as well as establishing his new company Aspen MLT.

I believe Michael would have resumed his pencil work on fathom Vol.3 which has recently come out but is pencilled by Ale Garza.

I never met Michael, nor did i ever see him, but i can say he's probably one of the artists that got me interested in comic books again a few years ago when i had picked up Fathom volume two.

Its my regret that i never did meet michael at any cons ( i have yet to go to san diego or LA or any of the major american comic-cons) but it was something i looked forward to because i really enjoyed Mike's style and his stories from his water wielding herione Aspen matthews or magical Grace from Soulfire.

Michael has battled Cancer before and it took him out of comics after his first volume on Fathom was done, i remember reading the back of one of the comics and him writing how sick he was and how bad he felt not being able to work, he joked and said that the drugs gave him some awesome ideas for his stories.

Another sad fact is that mike was a young guy with a lot of talent and although many artists and people dislike his style it is one of my favorite styles in comics today, reading interviews with people who've worked under mike or met him have said nothing but great things so it pains me to hear another great artist is lost to the world.

Rest in peace Michael, you won't be forgotten~

Hey All,

Akuma's style isn't my own original take on him, hence why i didn't bother to fully draw him out.

Above was a rough dante from DMC but the colored version didn't try out to look like him, i was just foolin' with some colors, he ended up looking like some weird hulk-dante or something.

I whipped up a quick Aang afterwards ( also in Sketchbook pro)

YA event and more

Hey guys,

Wow its been a fairly busy week, i finally put up the some pictures from the Young Associates event, its basically a group of people who have donated money to the gallery and about 3 times a year the gallery holds a party for them when new artwork comes in to the gallery.

The event started at 7pm and i was there untill 10pm ( i was suppose to be only till 9pm) but there was so many people in line waiting to have them drawn! you can't even tell by looking at the photos, but there was always a long line waiting to have me draw them, needless to say i didn't even take a break the whole time so i could try and get everyone in, if the event didn't close at 10 i might have been there even longer because people still wanted to have one! Anyway it was a fun time and i hope i can go back later this fall again.

I've also put up some sketchs and a WIP painting of order-sol from GGAC, i used alias sketchbook pro for everything on that one, you'll notice my lines are kinda wobbly, i only own a 5x4 tablet so its a bit hard but i'll make due untill i get a bigger one.

I post it again once i finsh his hair.

Hey Bloggers

First off sorry for such a long break between posts! i really have no good excuse like i was working or something, i'm not really quite sure what happened...it probably was a combination of me being tired from work, working on a new project ( won't mention it just yet) helping out some friends in their project ( flash-animation based) and just being lazy.

I'm going to try extra hard to get stuff up here, i feel like i've been slacking from my drawing for a little too long now.

Other things that happened, i just saw the new Hulk movie and i suggest to everyone to go see it, its a fun movie and way better then the ang lee version by far ( i drew a rough loose hulk just because of the film )

You'll notice the Dante ( hopefully you knew?) doodle, i don't own a PS3 but devil may cry 4 is by far a fun game, for anyone who owns a PS3 and liked the MGS series go get MGS4! its just pure awesome! i played about 2 hours into it and i got hooked on it, great story,visuals and feel by far one of the best PS3 games so far.

Tomorrow is my Art gallery event in Vancouver so i'll try and get some pictures of the event and hopefully some of me drawing there, I'll be putting those photos up within the next day or two.

Lastly huge thanks to everyone ( new and old) who posted on my last post! thanks alot for the awesome comments guys! I'll get back to you when i can
